Hi everyone, Im a newbie so I hope that some kind volvo enthusiast will be able to help... I have had my v40 a number of years now and it is a '98 v40 turbo, now my problem is, is that she starts very well in the mornings ( this has just started to happen by the way) and after a run, stop and try to restart she fires and starts and then fails to tickover, sometimes she starts, fires and starts but with very low revs maybe 200 or so, what I am doing to maintain the start is to catch it when she fires and flip the throttle to keep it going. Now I have read the threads on this brilliant forum site and in particular the articles on 'throttle body' and the cleaning of, and am wondering if this is the first port of call to start looking at, by the way the mileage now is 103,000. Any answers would be much appreciated as her in doors wants me to fix it for this weekend!!!!!!!!!!! I said I would have a look at it .

Hi twilightflyer, yes the throttle body would be a good place to start and it is a relatively easy job to do, when was the car last serviced? Are you using genuine volvo spark plugs(they do make a difference) what condition is your air filter in? Have you checked all your vacuum pipes for leaks, at 103k miles I would seriously consider changing the fuel filter as well.

Hi Stevo 48, well today I dismantled the throttle body and I was amazed at the amount of carbon deposit that had built up despite a Volvo service at 90K. anyway I cleaned all the gunge away using a throttle body cleaner from my local 'Motorsave' shop, re-assembled the unit to the engine ensured everything was connected correctly and it started first time......after the engine warmed up I shut everything down waited 10 minutes and it started up again without it cutting out, so a good job done, by the way cleaned the plugs while I was at it.
